ART AWAKENS THE HEART
Artworks and conversations you will find on this website are original thoughts and creations by older adults who live in nursing homes, memory care programs, or attend day programs, and were part of the Cape Ann Museum CAM Connections program in Gloucester, MA. Many of the participants never had an opportunity to explore and experience their intuitive, emotional and visual responses to the arts
Participants in our art exchanges have shared countless testimonials of positive effects on their well being.
Lila, living at Seacoast Nursing & Rehab Center, said before a painting workshop,
"I am not a painter, but I want to express something from inside myself."
Lila then began to paint and said this:
"I'm forgetting my worries. This makes me feel peaceful."
The opportunity to try out something new, explore a bit, grow and learn through that exploration,
and be a maker of ideas or things- are all essential to a meaningful life, a life well lived
While looking at art or creating art through varied forms of expression, emblems of unique personhood, shine through. Art opens a door to articulate a vision or unlock
a creative instinct.
“Painting is pure expression- a preverbal language, the language of feeling we all started with..."
Chasing Matisse: A Year in France Living My Dream by James Morgan
During art exchanges, we join together, although we are often coming from two very distinctive worlds. As spontaneous words, paintings, music and poems emerge, we surprise ourselves, reveal our individual and collective identities. There is a kind of common ground we walk and a metamorphosis that happens. We are moved together by moments of awe, new found discovery & inspiration.
